Phase: Phase 4: Action Plan

Sector: Health & Education
Public Policy : Progama de Reducción de Vulnerabilidad del Estado ante Desastres
In 2010, the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) published the Peru’s seismicity map for the period 1964-2008. Still, there was an underlying need for better information on disaster risk for critical infrastructure. The IGP entered thus into an agreement with The World Bank to execute Technical Assistance Projects (TAPs) in order to build institutional and technical capacity and assess probabilistic seismic hazard.
The first TAP strengthened the capacity of the Seismology Unit of the IGP to generate probabilistic seismic hazard information through technical workshops. Outputs from the first TAP fed the second TAP, which conducted a seismic risk assessment of the health and education infrastructure portfolio in collaboration with the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. The results of these studies were used to prioritize detailed vulnerability studies, refine risk assessment results, and will also be soon used to design a National School Infrastructure Plan.
